2014 Season

Pepper wraps things up with the championship title.

Jordan Lee Pepper wanted this title more than anyone else. And he managed to get it on his second time of trying: having been pipped to the post by his fellow South African Kelvin van der Linde in his debut season in 2013, Pepper is now the champion of the 2014 season.

But the final season of the Scirocco R-Cup, which now comes to an end after five successful years, was anything but a one-man show. In fact, although Pepper got the season off to a good start with a commanding double victory, the German driver Jason Kremer subsequently began to pile on the pressure, scoring two wins and a number of other good placements to eat into the front-runner’s lead. Ultimately, however, he was unable to prevent Pepper from securing the title in the penultimate event of the season on the Nürburgring.

Celebs, girl power and a deserved champion. A video featuring the highlights of the Scirocco R-Cup season.

Interview: Hans Top on 17 years of One-Make Racing Series

“There have been so many special moments.”

Hans Top remembering 17 years of one-make racing series.

The Scirocco R-Cup was like a home from home for Hans Top of Abt Sportsline: in the five-year history of the environmentally friendly one-make racing series, he and his team of mechanics were responsible for looking after the cars. Top, who hails from Denmark, joined Volkswagen Motorsport back in 1997 and spent the first few years handling the Lupo Cup and the Polo Cup. The Scirocco R-Cup was Top’s ‘baby’. He spoke about his experiences in an interview.

Hans, what set Volkswagen’s one-make racing series apart?
Over the years, we have had three car types that all worked very well – the Lupo, the Polo and the Scirocco. Young drivers were presented with a fantastic car and the rest was then down to them. The concept of having a level playing field is perfect for seeing which drivers are truly skilled. Another major advantage is that participating in Volkswagen’s one-make racing series has always been affordable.

Volkswagen’s involvement goes way beyond it joining the touring car school …
Yes, we also taught the young ones a great deal of discipline. It was about preparing them for the future and teaching them how to, for example, handle the media properly. After his son had been at the touring car school for two years, a Volkswagen dealer once said: “Now I can make use of him in the business too.”

You have now clocked up five great years with the Scirocco R-Cup. What has been the most special moment for you in that time?
I’ll have to give that some thought. There have been so many special moments. What I have most enjoyed is working with our famous guest entrants. Having the opportunity to meet legendary people such as Johnny Herbert, Damon Hill, Nicola Larini and many other famous faces and being responsible for their vehicles has been a real thrill. And the grand final in Hockenheim in 2014 was, of course, fantastic too, with Pierre Casiraghi and Prince Albert of Thurn and Taxis as our guests. Prince Albert joined us in the Lupo Cup at the tender age of 17 and began to gather his first racing experience. And I recently realised that he hasn’t changed a bit. He even still knows the mechanics’ names from back then and said hello to everyone in person. He’s simply a great guy. And the same goes for Pierre Casiraghi, who was with us for the second time.

Have there been negative experiences too?
I can’t really think of any truly negative experiences. But as I was responsible for the vehicles, it was obviously always upsetting for me to see one of them fail to work. Fortunately, we never had many technical malfunctions – but the few we did have would then really prey on my mind. It was the same thing with accidents. If something broke, it was something of a concern to me, especially as I knew that the young up-and-coming drivers weren’t exactly swimming in money. Fortunately, the Volkswagen concept meant that the costs for any repairs needed were kept to an absolute minimum.

What’s your favourite Scirocco R-Cup track?
I’ve always been particularly fascinated by the Norisring. It may be little more than four corners, but it’s fantastic for the spectators to have cars zipping past them all the time. Also, the track is in the heart of a big city and is easy to get to. It’s a little on the short side, unfortunately, but there’s a fantastic atmosphere there.

What was the best ever race for you?
There have been more than one. I was always particularly impressed by the races at Brands Hatch in the UK. Which brings me back to some legendary drivers such as Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundell, who were outstanding there. They were able to keep up with the young drivers and they really piled on the pressure, but they were nonetheless always fair. And they would have a whale of a time at the parties after the races too – they were true professionals!
