One of the special features of the World Rally Championship is that all vehicles have to be based on production models. The Polo R WRC is the result of an uncompromising further development of the production vehicle to create its rally counterpart.

Perfect conditions for the Polo R WRC: the technical rule in force since 2011 in the FIA World Rally Championship prescribes a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection, thereby continuing the trend towards downsizing – a discipline in which Volkswagen plays a leading role with small-volume, turbocharged and thus highly efficient engines.
