New dream team in the World Rallycross Championship: Petter Solberg and Johan Kristoffersson start with Volkswagen Sweden.
Rally legend Petter Solberg and rising star Johan Kristoffersson will start with Volkswagen Sweden in this year’s FIA World Rallycross Championship. The Norwegian superstar and the young Swede will contest all twelve rounds of the world championship – from the opening round in Barcelona (E) to the season finale in Cape Town (ZA) – with the 560-hp Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar.
“This is a dream come true,” said a delighted Petter Solberg. “Anything is possible with the support of Volkswagen Sweden and with Johan Kristoffersson as my team-mate. Right from the opening race, our top goal will be to win the world championship this year.” Solberg won the Drivers’ title in the World Rallycross Championship in 2014 and 2015, while Kristoffersson finished runner-up in 2016.
Similar to the commitment in the American Global Rallycross Championship (GRC), in which Volkswagen of America has fielded two Beetles with great success, the customer racing department at Volkswagen Motorsport will provide technical support for the Solberg team. “Following the great success with the Beetle in the GRC in the USA, and our new customer racing strategy, expanding towards the WRX is a logical step,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. “We will assemble the cars and provide technical support, based on our experience and success in the GRC and the World Rally Championship. Petter Solberg’s team and Volkswagen Sweden will run the operation.” The team’s headquarters will be in Torsby (S).
The FIA World Rallycross Championship (WRX) begins on 31st March in Barcelona (E). In total, twelve rounds will be held in eleven countries, on three continents. The spectacular championship will make two trips to Germany for the races in Hockenheim (3 to 5 May) and in Buxtehude, near Hamburg (27 – 29 September). The season finale takes place in Cape Town (ZA) on 12 November.
